The Best Restaurants in Helen
By: Ginevra Boyes
Helen is a small town perfect for people with big appetites. With its deep Bavarian roots, Helen is a great place to go to sample authentic German and Central European dishes without having to cross the Atlantic. However you don’t just have to stick with schnitzel and sauerkraut during your time here. You’ll also find plentiful options for delicious coffee, tasty Asian Fusion, and finger-licking good BBQ. Here are our favorite places to chow down.
1. Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe
Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe has regularly been voted the best German restaurant in Helen. Located off Main Street, this charming German and Czech eatery specializes in a variety of fried cheese specialities, including french brie stuffed with ham, a fried cheese kabob, and their famous fried cheese “steak.” You can also choose from German pork and schnitzel dishes, delicious sandwiches, and Muller’s traditional bread dumplings. Don’t miss out on their desserts, which include apple strudel and German chocolate cake.
2. Spice 55
Can’t decide between Japanese or Thai? Then Spice 55 is just the place for you. Spice 55 serves up mouth-watering satays, soups, curries, and noodle dishes as well as fresh sushi and Japanese mains. You can try classic sushi rolls or get experimental with inventive menu items like their Bagel Roll, Eruption Roll, and Red Hot Chili Pepper Roll.
3. Hofer’s of Helen
No trip to Helen is complete without eating a meal at Hofer’s of Helen. This authentic German bakery and cafe uses only the freshest ingredients, with menu items prepared daily. In the bakery portion, you’ll find a mouthwatering array of European tortes and desserts, including classics like apple strudel, black forest cheesecake, and sacher torte. If you choose not to enjoy our full, made-to-order breakfast at Sylvan Valley Lodge & Cellars, you can get a hearty, filling breakfast at Hofer’s. Order their tasty alpine french toast or biscuits with German gravy. For lunch, you can choose from their extensive sandwich menu, all made with freshly baked German bread, as well as a variety of specials from the grill. All the furniture in Hofer’s is imported directly from Germany and on the walls you will find a fascinating mural depicting the history of German baking.
4. Mully’s Nacoochee Grill
Mully’s Nacoochee Grill is one of our favorite spots to send guests. Located in a charming country home with modern vibes, Mully’s chef-driven menu features the freshest farm-to-table cuisine, including hand-cut steaks, fried rainbow trout, and shrimp and grits. They also have a full bar with a daily drink menu including local and international wines and fine craft beers. Come on Sunday’s for their popular brunch, complete with the Best bloody Mary’s in town.
5. North Georgia Barbeque
Helen is located in the South after all, so you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t eat some barbeque while you are here. North Georgia Barbeque serves the best in town, specializing in generous portions of ribs, pulled pork, burgers and wings. People also go crazy for delicious sides like cole slaw, baked beans, french fries, and brunswick stew. North Georgia Barbeque offers great outdoor seating during the summer, giving your meal the feel of a classic outdoor BBQ.
