The days are getting shorter and the fall leaves have shown their colors and fallen from the trees. Do you know what that means? It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year! While towns and cities across the globe celebrate Christmas, in Helen, GA it is a little more magical. November 13-December 6: Festival of Trees

Each year the community of Helen comes together for a unique event called the Festival of Trees. Beautifully decorated trees and wreaths are displayed at Unicoi State Park where you can stroll through and bid on your favorites. Exploring this magical woodland park is wonderfully romantic and is something you can do at your own pace. On December 7th, the trees are awarded to the highest bidders and all of the proceeds go to United Way of White County .

November 29: Helen’s 50th Celebration-Annual Lighting of the Village

Helen already has that magical Christmas feeling every day of the year, but on November 29th, the town turns into a full-blown Christmas Wonderland. Just after the sun sets, musical performances will precede to bring everyone into the holiday spirit before the lighting of the village at 6 pm. Hot cocoa will be sold by local merchants so grab a cup and your loved one to get into the holiday spirit this season.

December 6-21: A Victorian Christmas in Nacoochee

Visit the Hardman Farm every weekend to learn about Victorian Christmas traditions at the iconic Mansion at West End. Docents dressed in their finest 1870’s outfits will lead you through the festive building while live Christmas music plays in the background. You can also visit with Santa, take a horse-drawn carriage down the Unicoi Turnpike, and vote for your favorite Victorian Christmas Tree.

December 7: Mistletoe Market

Don’t fret if you haven’t found the perfect gifts for all of your friends and family. At the Mistletoe Market at the Helen Arts & Heritage Center, you can find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts that will delight your loved ones. December 14: Helen Holiday Half Marathon

Start off your New Year’s resolution a little early by signing up for the Helen Holiday Half Marathon on December 14th. This course leads you through 13.1 miles of the most gorgeous terrain of Unicoi State Park. Finishers are awarded a cozy beanie and a finishers pint glass to enjoy while you watch the Helen holiday lights parade.

December 14: A Christmas Wonderland in Helen

The whole town is lit up with holiday lights, Christmas songs are on the radio, and every store has some sort of merry touch that brings the spirit of the holidays alive. Where does the tour take me?

Each tour starts off at King Ludwig’s Biergarten right in the heart of Helen. Your enthusiastic tour leader, Heather, will take you around the village to 6 different restaurants each offering tasty German treats for you to sample and enjoy. All the food you enjoy is included in the price of the tour and is more than enough to fill you up by the end. How long is the tour?

The tour starts at 2 pm and runs until 5 pm. You spend about 25 minutes at each restaurant sampling the flavors curated by local chefs. This is the perfect activity to do after a day of hiking and shopping or on your first afternoon in town. After 5, you are already in the village and stuffed with tasty food so you can explore some of the nightlife and shows in town.

What days can I sign up for the tour?

Right now, Helen and Back Food Tours have tours during varying days of the week and you can always check the calendar to see what days excursions are planned. Helen isn’t just known for the quaint German village, or the annual Oktoberfest celebration. The chocolatiers and pastry chefs in this town are some of the best. From wedding cakes and European pastries to chocolate truffles and even the new ice cream rolls, Helen has enough treats to satisfy even the most stubborn sweet tooth. Here are some of our favorites in the town:

Fudge

Any chocoholic lights up at the sight of fudge. Creamy, melt in your mouth, rich fudge just can’t be beaten and Kopper Kettle Fudge makes some of the best around. The best part about fudge is that it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, so it makes the perfect souvenir to bring home with you from Helen. Sample their unique and delectable varieties and you’ll want to grab a hefty amount of each!

Funnel Cake & Strudel

Toppings and flavors are placed upon a freezing cold slab and mixed with fresh cream (or alternative-milk cream) and rolled into little creamy cup of pure bliss. You will be absolutely blown away by the rich flavors and customized treats offered by this shop.

Beer has been a staple of a good time since the ancient times. Chilly day? A dark stout will warm you right up. Unbearably hot outside? Sip on a refreshing pilsner. Is there anything that a good beer won’t fix?

Breweries are popping up all over the US, but some of the best have nestled into the Northern Georgia mountains. I mean with the Bavarian-style village of Helen right there, it only makes sense to have great beer all within a stones throw. So here are our favorite places to grab a cold one with some friends in Northern Georgia.

King Ludwig Biergarten in Helen will transport you to an Alpen ale house filled with friendly faces, German-style lagers, gigantic pretzels, and lots of dancing. Stop in anytime to grab a pint and munch on their famous (and unbelievably large) pretzels. The restaurant often hosts musical acts playing upbeat music to get people up and dancing. This place isn’t just a place to grab a beer, but an all out dining experience!

Whistle Top Brew Company in downtown Cornelia was one of the first craft breweries in the area. Scott and Gary Hulsey started the brewery in 2014 and have been producing a wide variety of beers and ales ever since. This laid-back establishment is only open Thursday – Saturday so if you want to hit this great spot, make sure to plan ahead.

Left Nut Brewing Company in Gainesville is located inside an old textile mill and is actually located on the National Register of Historic Places. Their unique taproom is an absolute must-see! Hang out in the old mill and sip on their signature and seasonal brews. Curious about the name? It comes from the idea that the founders were willing to give up anything to make their brewing dream come true. Even… a left nut.

Tantrum Brewing in Cleveland, GA is a homegrown story of heart, home, and hops. Founder Ross Crumpton wanted to make great brews to support the community in his hometown and bring people together around a glass of beer. Head on in to taste their wide selection of brews. They are currently experimenting with fresh Georgia produce to create fruity and citrusy beers that are perfect for summer afternoons.

Oktoberfest

Now you can’t talk about beer in Northern Georgia without mentioning Oktoberfest. Helen, GA puts on one of the best Oktoberfests outside of Berlin. This german-style town throws the longest Oktoberfest in the U.S. spanning from the beginning of September to the end of October. Grab your Lederhosen and get ready for weeks filled with brats, bands, and of course… BEER!

You can stop at any of these breweries to relax and refresh after a long day of touring the stunning Northern Georgia mountains, or you can hit all of them in one day on an epic ale trail. 6 Breathtaking Waterfalls in North Georgia

Northern Georgia is blessed with some of the most beautiful terrain in the country. Rolling hills covered in lush forests, biodiverse species and flowers, streams meandering all throughout the valleys, and stunning waterfalls around every corner. There are so many all over the state, so we decided to pick out our 6 favorites that you could visit over and over again for their timeless beauty.

Blue Hole Falls

Deep in the Cherokee National Forest lies a lovely hiking trail that meanders along 4 waterfalls and ultimately leads you to a serene swimming hole. Hiking up on a hot day to a cool forest pool is an amazing treat. There are tall rock walls surrounding the waterfall fed pool that people have been known to cliff jump from.

High Shoals Falls

While you are visiting Blue Hole Falls, you may as well continue up the trail to High Shoals Falls, one of the largest and most popular waterfalls in the area. The trail up to the falls consists of stone stairs and water crossings as you ascend up the forest. You’ll know you are close when the roaring of the falls starts to amplify and the tree canopy opens up to make way for the large falls.

Anna Ruby Falls

These waterfalls are near Unicoi State Park just north of Helen and are accessible to all. The Anna Ruby Falls are actually two twin waterfalls where two streams join. You can access these picturesque falls by a half mile paved path through lush green forests.

Dukes Creek Falls

Dukes Creek started the gold rush in 1828 when gold was found in this very river. There are rumors that you can still find gold flakes in the stream! Follow the stream up into the woods to find a stunning 150 foot waterfall that is just magnificent. The trail is about two miles round trip and is easily accessible, making it perfect for families.

Helton Creek Falls

These falls are a short walk from the parking area and showcase a set of two waterfalls cascading down dark slate rocks. This is a great quick stop to see a bit of Georgia’s stunning nature. You can also hike around the falls on a lovely two-mile loop to see the stream and local flora and fauna up close.

Tallulah Falls

The falls at the gorge were so breathtakingly beautiful they decided to name an entire town after them. Tallulah Falls in the town of (get this) Tallulah Falls are some of the most awe-inspiring sights you could imagine. The Tallulah Gorge State Park is set in a canyon with towering evergreens and deciduous trees galore. Talk above the gorge on their suspension bridge and peer down to the rushing river. To access the falls, you need a permit, which is free and must be attained at the visitors center to climb down and really soak in the beauty. The river cascades down a series of rocks creating numerous waterfalls along the same river.

While you can enjoy these wonderful waterfalls at anytime of the year, fall is definitely one of the most magical times. The red, yellow, and orange leaves are everywhere from the trees to the ground, and even floating along in the streams. Take a day and explore all of these great waterfalls in one epic day, or pick your favorite and bring a picnic to really soak up the beauty.

This historic and charming collection of businesses has been in operation for over a century, making for a truly one-of-a-kind shopping and dining experience. The village also gives visitors easy access to the historic Sautee Nacoochee Mound, an impressive structure located at the western edge of the valley. Nacoochee Village is the perfect afternoon excursion during your stay at Sylvan Valley Lodge & Cellars.

Nacoochee Village is filled with many unique local shops, several of which are still located in their original historic buildings. For example, the Nacoochee Village Antique Mall is showcased in the 1876 Martin House. You could easily spend hours digging through the countless treasures located inside. With over 50 dealers and 7,000 square feet of space, the Nacoochee Village Antique Mall is a true shopping adventure.

Across the street from the Antique Mall is Nora Mill Granary , a fully operational gristmill producing an impressive variety of high-quality corn and wheat based products, including grits, cornmeal, flour, and porridge as well as biscuit, bread, waffle, and pancake mixes. If you arrive at the right time, you might catch a glimpse of the grains being ground in the mill’s original water-powered 1,500-pound French buhr stones. Their products are available both in the country store and for purchase online.

Another incredible local business is The Willows Pottery , a working studio and gallery that creates beautiful stoneware pottery and ceramics. The region’s mountainous terrain and rich soil combine to create a distinctive class of wines that are quickly gaining national and international prominence. Many liken North Georgia wines to those grown in Italy’s Piedmont, but we like to think our wines are our in a class of their own. A tour through the vineyards of North Georgia is the perfect way to experience an up-and-coming wine destination while also exploring the region’s majestic natural beauty. You can follow the “Georgia Wine Highway” stretching from Jasper to Tiger to hit some of the region’s best vineyards and wineries. For this list, we’ve picked our favorite wineries close to Helen and the surrounding area.

Habersham Winery & Vineyards is one of North Georgia’s oldest and largest wineries. It has been producing traditional Georgian wines since 1983, making it a mainstay on the scene. Their flagship location is just ½ mile south of Helen in the Nacoochee Village. You can taste their wines for $7.50 a person in their elegant and light filled tasting room or call two weeks in advance to go with a bigger group. Every May, Habersham also hosts Winefest , a massive celebration of Georgia wine where 10 of the region’s best wineries bring their favorite bottles for an afternoon of food, music, and of course, wine.

Yonah Mountain Vineyards is a beautiful 200-acre family owned winery located at the base of Yonah Mountain. They specialize in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Their tasting room is open 7 days a week. For $20, you can try 5 of their finest wines. To go a little deeper into the wine making process, schedule a Cave Tour and Tasting, where a guide will take you through the only known underground wine caves in all of Georgia. The $40 tour, only available when scheduled in advance, also includes 8 wine tastings and a complimentary wine glass. On August 25th, Yonah Mountain will be hosting their annual Crush Fest , a day-long festival featuring live music, food trucks, an artisan market, wine tastings, and barefoot grape stomping. The owners, Jane and Bob Miller, will even provide musical accompaniment for the stomping on their accordion and guitar.

CeNita Vineyards, Winery, and Tasting Room is a family-run winery in the nearby town of Cleveland. The vineyard was actually built over the family’s original dairy land. Because the wines are made by fourth generation Georgia farmers, owners Greg & Carol Crumley bring a special understanding of the soil, climate, and growing seasons of the grapes. Their tasting room opened in 2015.

Three Sisters Vineyards is Dahlonega’s first family run winery. The unique terrain of the Dahlonega plateau make their wines especially rich and unique. You can enjoy a glass of their wine at their elegant cherry wood tasting bar or their relaxing stone patio considered “one of the best places to stop and soak in this unique wine region.” They also regularly host live music on their Crush Pad Desk. Its beautiful rural setting in the lush mountains of North Georgia make Three Sisters a popular wedding and event destination.
